Almost everyone that visits Medellin enjoys a good ol’ classic Narcos-related story. As much as locals hate this part of our history, we know our city has infamously permeated pop culture.
For the sake of this article, we’re not going to get in-depth into ‘he-who-must-not-be-named’. Instead, we’re going to dive right into one of his many properties. Bosques de la Volcana.
Bosques de la Volcana is an apartment complex located in the El Poblado sector of Medellin. A stone’s throw away from El Tesoro Shopping mall and a 7-minute drive from Parque Lleras.
But what is this place? Why is it so eerie to us locals and why can’t guys’ trips get enough of this place?
What is Bosques de La Volcana?
Back in the 80s and early 90s, drug kingpin, PE, and his associates were the kings of Medellin. Their hold on local and national government made him an unstoppable force.
He grew so rich and powerful that he ended up having over 500 buildings in Medellin alone! Bosques de la Volcana is an apartment complex with 2 towers each holding 4 duplexes.
Each duplex contains 6-8 bedrooms, marble finishes, bullet, and bombproof everything. Along with a semi-Olympic-sized pool.
There are a few buildings in El Poblado with similar characteristics. But back in 2005-2006 when the first bachelor part groups started frequenting Medellin. One brave foreigner bought one of these 8 apartments.
The story has it that he invested over $100,000 USD in its remodeling and those around said his parties were legendary.
Who Owns the Apartments?
As stated, these buildings were built by PE’s associates. Anyone who visits these places can immediately feel an emptiness and weird atmosphere. If these walls could talk, I’m sure they’ve seen some shit.
Today, a few of these are American-owned. While others owned by the descendants of important people from the 80s and 90s. Individuals who lived through Medellin’s dark ages and today have what was once seen as a white elephant.
Bosques de la Volcana Today
I’m not going to say all this to talk about a random apartment complex, no. I say this because, for the past 7 years, we’ve seen VIP bachelor party groups rent a few of these places.
The apartments’ history, huge pools, and recent finishes have made this complex famous within the community.
But, the complex still has high-profile locals who inhabit the place. Locals that hate to have it be a part of the short-term rental community. When you walk into the bomb-proof parking lot. You’ll immediately come across abandoned speedboats and jet skis.
Not to mention luxury vehicles and rare antique cars. But despite all this, it continues to be a guys’ trip favorite.
Renting a Place in Bosques de la Volcana
The pros of renting a place in Bosques have to be the pool, history, and size of the apartments. These places scream Narcos culture and though we don’t endorse this. We enjoy teaching our clients the history that makes this city more than the home of PE.
The cons are the heavy security which doesn’t allow taxis to enter the premises. You’re also not allowed to have a van parked right outside. This is why the 4 out of 8 places that are available for short-term rental include a few extra amenities. Things like a driver on-site, daily cleaning, and 2 even having a built-in nightclub.
If you can get past these restrictions, Bosques is an instant fan favorite.
