Medellin tours or what to do in Medellin are often among the most searched Medellin terms. This is in large part because of the thousands of visitors this city receives every weekend.
Whether you’re part of a group or here by yourself, most travelers can’t wait to become immersed in local culture. This is why we want every one of our readers to see what the city has to offer before booking your trip.
So without further ado, here is our compilation of Medellin tours and how to select the right one.
Medellin Tours – Group Size and Purpose of your Trip
Not every Medellin trip was created equal. This means that bachelor parties for the most part tend to do very little exploring. Especially when it comes to early morning excursions.
While other more culture/adventure-seeking groups want to experience the real Medellin. Which are you?
We have tours/excursions that are for that group of travelers who claim to be a hybrid of these two. All tours are private and tailor-made to accommodate any group.
If you’re here for a bachelor party, we have a pre-made itinerary we recommend. Nothing too difficult to adhere to. Excursions begin no earlier than 9 am and controlled walking. Perfect for those to want to dabble in local culture, while preserving energy for nightlife activities.
Cultural Tours
When looking for cultural tours, look no further than those that highlight history. A big part of our history has been coffee culture and everything behind it. Muleteers and coffee pickers are the very fabric of our culture. Even Medellin’s staple dish, the bandeja paisa, is a symbol of what our ancestors used to eat.
But I digress. We offer a coffee tour where we visit a real family-run coffee farm. Here, you pick your own beans, learn the history of this crop and follow the process. Everything from harvesting, picking, processing, and drinking a freshly brewed cup of coffee.
Our exotic fruit tour is an excursion where we visit the city’s largest market and get a glimpse of how it’s run. Everything from the plethora of busses that drive in to pick up and drop off crops. To the wide array of strange/exotic fruits and vegetables.
We generally love to turn this into a street food tour immediately after. Empanadas, Colombian hot dogs, and various drinks. We recommend an antacid immediately after, but well worth it.
Medellin Tours – The Gruesome Part of Culture
Unfortunately, our recent history (and by recent I mean the last 40 years) were plagued by violence.
Anyone that visits Medellin is no stranger to Pablo Escobar and other notorious Colombian druglords. Although we try not to use his name too much, we know the importance of being able to explain his past.
This is why within the realm of cultural tours in Medellin, there are the Pablo Escobar and Comuna 13 tours. The Pablo Escobar tour highlights everything from his place of birth. Where he lived, famous landmarks, and even his burial place. Not exactly an award-winning tour for locals, but solicited by many travelers.
A second tour that goes hand in hand with the Escobar tour is Comuna 13. This is a neighborhood where Escobar trained his assassins in the 1980s. Famous killers or ‘sicarios’ as they’re called, were born in this neighborhood.
Don’t think this is a tour of a ghetto. It’s a gentrified ghetto if you will. Meaning, it’s not occupied by the wealthy, but its residents have cleaned up the area and made it a hub for innovation. In this neighborhood art, dance and culture take center stage. Throw in unreal views, delicious coffee, and exotic fruit ice cream. You’ve got yourself an action-packed afternoon.
Adventure Tours in Medellin
By adventure tours, we don’t mean you’ll be scaling mountains or jumping off bridges. Our Medellin adventure tours are more focused on merging culture with scenery and a bit more excitement.
One of our most popular Medellin tours is the ATV Tour in Medellin. An action-packed 2,3 or 4-hour excursion. Here we wander off to the rural side of Medellin and visit local farms. All this while on the back of a state-of-the-art quad. These are scenic tours so please be aware that they’re guided. However, you should still be aware of precautions to avoid accidents.
Another very popular adventure tour we offer is our paragliding excursion. This 20-minute flight is an amazing activity for thrill seekers looking to get a bird’s eye view of the Colombian countryside. You won’t be alone, of course, but you will be able to request more speed and height from your instructor.
Then there’s Guatape
Guatape is one of our signature excursions and the best way to enjoy a mix of both types of tours.
The town of Guatape is 2 hours away from the city of Medellin and home to ‘la piedra del Peñol’. The latter is a monolith with an epic view of a manmade lake and what appear to be cluster islands.
Once you walk up the 700+ stairs, we take a short drive to the dock for a day of cold beers and cruising. Those looking to take it up a notch may also rent ATVs and even wakeboards!
We offer our Guatape Boat Party excursion, an epic all-day event, the perfect out-of-town experience for bachelor parties in Medellin. We pick you up in our Mercedes Sprinter, load it up with brews, and stop on the road for a delicious paisa breakfast. After the aforementioned monolith visit, we then head over to the docks.
Connect your music and a day out in the sun is in the works. A beautiful lake + the company of friends makes for an epic time.
