Where to stay in Medellin?
Contrary to popular belief, Medellin is in fact a pretty big city. It’s not the metropolis that New York City or Tokyo is. But with a population of almost 3 million, it is comparable in size to Chicago.
The best place to stay in Medellin is near the South of the city in a neighborhood called El Poblado. The sector is home to the city’s elite and the neighborhood that has the Parque Lleras and Provenza areas.
El Poblado has the best hotels in Medellin, villas, and penthouses. Making it the ideal neighborhood for everything you need. The closer you stay to Parque Lleras, the more walkable the city will seem.
But El Poblado itself can seem very big. So there are a few places you should know of:
- Parque Lleras: Medellin bachelor party central. Dozens of bars and restaurants. Great to spend a few hours per day in but a bit overwhelming if you end up having to stay in the area. Street vendors can get annoying and houses are smaller.
- Provenza: A more upscale street full of higher end restaurants and nightclubs.
- Via Jardin: A bit more residential so if you’re looking to bring the party back, make sure you’re aware of house rules.
- Las Palmas: This is the long avenue you drive on the way down from the airport. Here is where you’ll find villas with the best views of the city. A bit further from Parque Lleras (12 min drive) but ideal for after parties and private events.
- San Lucas/Envigado: Further from nightlife but you’ll find huge villas at reasonable prices. If you don’t mind a few extra minutes of commute time here you’ll find a bang for your buck.
We have the best selection of penthouses and villas at the best prices. Be sure to browse through our rentals page (when you’re done with this guide to Medellin) and drop us a line.
Medellin Nightlife and Parque Lleras
Parque Lleras is Medellin’s most popular nightlife sector and home to a cornucopia of bars and nightclubs.
Medellin is one of Latin America’s reggaeton capitals so don’t expect to find too many bars that won’t play this genre. It is what the ladies listen to and who knows, after a few hours, it might grow on you.
Medellin nightlife is best enjoyed Thursday – to Saturday. We recommend having everything at least pre-scheduled. Having a late dinner (see next section). A little bar crawl in Parque Lleras, followed by hitting up a Reggaeton club.

Best Restaurants in Medellin
Medellin’s best restaurants include:
Be careful though, not ideal for large groups as dinner here can last anywhere from 2-3 hours. Not recommended for those looking to keep their buzz. Also, expect to pay anywhere between $150 per person.
The previous 3 restaurants make up the trifecta of high-end restaurants in Medellin. Expect to pay anywhere from $70-100 per person for an amazing meal + wine. El Cielo is the exception as they only offer 9-16 course meals valued at roughly $150. All these figures are in USD.
What to do in Medellin
But the groups that tend to have the most fun are groups that stay busy during the day with different activities. From ATV tours in Medellin to City Tours that highlight Medellín’s history. Groups that see the real Medellin are the guys that can’t stop talking about it.
Over the past few years, we’ve gotten groups that are adventurous while there are other groups that prefer more sightseeing. If you’re in the tier that prefers to get dirty, we have exotic ATV tours through the mountains.
For those who need to have water involved in any vacation. The town of Guatape has an amazing lake where pontoon parties and wakeboarding are a must. Lastly, for crews that prefer to take in a few sites and chill the rest of the time, we have the Comuna 13 Graffiti Tour. Made for lovers of history and culture. Comuna 13 is a must for any fan of the Narcos series or anyone looking to get a crash course in Medellin culture.
The pictures on these tours will be worth their weight in gold. Especially for those who almost couldn’t make it, you know who you are. We’ve even had crews book a tour and change clothing a few times for the sake of photo evidence.
Take a gander at our Medellin Tours or contact us for recommendations.
Medellin Weather
Most groups tend to visit the city for 3-4 days so packing well will be important. Bring 1-2 jeans, comfortable clothing for daytime excursions, swimming trunks, a few nice polos (or dress shirts), and a nice pair of shoes.
There will be walking during the day and once the sun sets, a nice polo will be beneficial to stay cool. Dress shoes aren’t a must but you don’t want to look like a backpacker at one of the many bars and clubs you’re likely to visit.
Medellin’s rainiest months are May and October and our hottest months are July and August. Again, it is hard to predict the weather in a valley so don’t be discouraged if you see it’s going to rain when planning your trip.
Is Medellin Safe?
Medellin often gets the bad rep it got back in the 80s and 90s but the city has come a long way.
It has its rough areas like every other city in South America meaning trouble will come to those who look for it. Stick to the main streets in the El Poblado neighborhood of the city and don’t be one of those obnoxious tourists, you’ll be fine.
We recommend you don’t bring flashy jewelry as it can lead you to stick out more than you need to.
We also offer a VIP Host in Medellin as well as a bodyguard in Medellin. In case you want to rid yourself of the stress of party planning. Your Medellin guide is an actual VIP Host.
A bodyguard won’t have groups stick out. Instead, you’ll have an added level of security. A translator that will help coordinate club entrances and get the group home safely.
Expect to pay anywhere between $200-$250 per day for the bodyguard service.
Medellin Airport
Medellin’s Jose Maria Cordova Airport is in the town of Rionegro which is 40 minutes away from the city. But with the addition of a brand new tunnel built-in 2019, the airport is a mere 20-minute drive from the city center.
The area around the airport is more scenic as it is high up in the mountains. If it weren’t for this airport, Rionegro would be known for farm life.
Now, the best way to get to and from the airport is by taxi. This is inexpensive costing only $30USD at today’s $4000 USD to the COP exchange rate. Our transportation in Medellin covers Airport transfers for single travelers and large groups.
Medellin Women
Many will tell their wives about the perfect weather and unreal views. But we all know it’s the women that make Medellin spectacular. The epitome of the Latin look, women in Medellin come in all shapes, colors, and sizes.
The pick-up game can be rather difficult if you don’t speak Spanish. But luckily, women here are for the most part, friendly.
Nighlife can be cliquey, but don’t let that deter you from inviting your favorite wingman and security guard for a night out.
Strip Clubs in Medellin
Strip clubs in Medellin are brothels with the strip club facade. There’s a stage in the middle of the club where they’ll dance, like any other strip club. The difference is, instead of throwing dollars on the stage. You’ll have the girls walk around after their two dances and ask for tips.
At this point, you would exchange your large bills for $2000 COP bills. $2000 COP is about 50 cents. You can choose to tip them or not but if you choose to not give out bills valued at 50 cents, what’s the point of even visiting.
Check out what are the best strip clubs in Medellin’s article. To learn more about the specific strip clubs you’ll need to visit.
Some of our favorite clubs are:
- La Isla
- Fase Dos
- Lountron (massage parlor)
